SPAN 1502: Elementary Spanish II

SPAN 1505: Intensive Elementary Spanish
Cr. 5. (5-0). Prerequisite: two years or more of high school Spanish within the past five years, placement by exam or consent of instructor. Credit for SPAN 1505 may not be applied toward a degree by students who have credit for SPAN 1502. Designed for students who enter with two or more years of high school Spanish or equivalent, but are not prepared to do work at the intermediate level, basic-level heritage learners, and students with strong proficiency in another romance language. Intensive oral, listening, reading, and writing skills.

SPAN 2301: Intermediate Spanish I

Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: placement by exam or by Director of Basic Language Program. Credit for both SPAN 2307 and SPAN 2301 may not apply to a degree. Designed for Hispanic students and other students from a Spanish-speaking background. Basic skills in reading, spelling, and composition.

SPAN 2308: Spanish for Hispanic Heritage Learners II
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: completion of SPAN 2307 with a minimum of C- or placement exam. Credit for both SPAN 2308 and SPAN 2302 may not apply to degree. Continued development of reading and writing skills, and control of formal Spanish.

SPAN 2309: Spanish for Business
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: successful completion of SPAN 2301 with a minimum grade of C- in 12 months immediately prior to enrollment or by placement exam immediately prior to enrollment. May be substituted for SPAN 2302. Practice in speaking, reading, writing, and translating Spanish in typical business situations. Taught in Spanish.

SPAN 2351: Introduction to Latino Cultural Studies
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ENGL 1304 or equivalent. Does not apply toward the Spanish major or minor.   Applies as elective for minors in Latin American studies or world cultures and literatures. Introduction to latino cultural studies with emphasis on latino migration, urbanization, acculturation and their impacts on family community, identity, and sex roles as expressed in literature as well as visual and performing arts. Taught in English.

SPAN 3301: Oral Communication in Spanish
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2302 or equivalent. For students who have learned Spanish as a foreign language. Students from a Spanish speaking environment normally will enroll in SPAN 3307. Intensive oral practice in small and large group context.

SPAN 3302: Written Communication in Spanish
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2302 or 2308 or equivalent. Intensive practice in the writing of Spanish in varying formal and informal styles from reports to letters.

SPAN 3303: Spanish Phonetics
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 3301 or SPAN 3307 and SPAN 3302 or SPAN 3308. Intensive practice in Spanish pronunciation, including transcription and drills.

SPAN 3305: Spanish Grammar Review
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2302 or SPAN 2308. Review of the fundamental grammatical structures with an emphasis on those aspects of the language which are problematic for students.

SPAN 3307: Public Speaking in Spanish
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2308 or SPAN 3301 or placement by examination. Intensive practice in composition, strategy and delivery of speeches in Spanish. Recommended for students going into the professions, and for professionals who must use Spanish in formal and professional settings.

SPAN 3308: Written Communication for Hispanic Heritage Learners
