Studies in accountancy and taxation (ACCT) prepare students for measuring and analyzing the income, costs, sources, and uses of funds of an organization on the basis of certain generally accepted principles. Such measurements and analyses are helpful to those directly responsible for attaining production, marketing, and financial objectives.

Careers are available in corporate, nonprofit, and government organizations, as well as in the field of public accounting.

Options to Meet Requirements for the Certified Public Accounting Exam

Accounting majors who wish to obtain the necessary hours (150 semester credit hours, of which 30 semester hours must be advanced hours in accounting coursework) required by the state of Texas to take the Uniform CPA Examination may do so in two ways at the University of Houston:

  1. The Master of Science in Accountancy degree and the Professional Program in Accounting (PPA) for currently enrolled UH undergraduate accounting majors:

The Accountancy and Taxation Department has developed the PPA which allows students in the undergraduate accounting program to "fast track" into the Master of Science in Accountancy (MS Accountancy) program. Students accepted into the PPA will satisfy the requirements for the B.B.A. in Accounting, which may include up to six hours of graduate equivalent courses taken in their senior year. Upon acceptance into the Master's program, students will then complete the remaining requirements for the MS Accountancy degree and be eligible to sit for the CPA exam by the end of their fifth year. Admission to the MS Accountancy program is based on undergraduate GPA for the last sixty hours and GMAT scores (contact the Professional Accounting Programs Office, 275 Melcher Hall, for details on admission requirements and procedures).

Students accepted into the PPA will satisfy the requirements for the B.B.A. in Accounting, which may include up to six hours of graduate equivalent accounting courses taken in their senior year. Upon acceptance into the Master's program, students will then complete the remaining requirements for the M.S. Accy. degree and be eligible to sit for the CPA exam by the end of their fifth year.

Students at UH with non-accounting backgrounds, students from other schools, or returning students may still pursue the M.S.Accoutancy degree, but are not eligible for the PPA plan. For further details on the MS Accountancy degree requirements, see MS Accountancy Admissions website or contact the Professional Accounting Programs Office, 275 Melcher Hall or call 713-743-4696. For further details on CPA requirements, contact the State Board of Public Accountancy.
  2. Certificate in Accountancy Program: The Bauer College of Business offers a nondegree Certificate in Accountancy through the Department of Accountancy and Taxation. This program is designed and limited to nondegree-seeking postbaccalaureate students who plan to sit for the Uniform CPA exam. Students should contact the Texas State Board of Public Accountancy for required general business courses. The certificate is awarded to students who complete at least ten courses in the program. Courses in this program may not be used to meet degree requirements at the undergraduate or graduate level.

Admission to this program is through the University of Houston Office of Admissions for students who apply and meet the university requirements for nondegree-seeking postbaccalaureate applicants. Students should contact the CAP advisor in the Professional Accounting Programs Office, 275 Melcher Hall, call 713-743-5752 for program and course information, or visit the CAP website.
