Approved Minor Requirements

College of Education approved minors require:

  1. At least fifteen semester hours, of which nine must be advanced.
  2. Six of the nine advanced semester hours must be taken in residence.
  3. A 2.00 minimum cumulative grade point average on courses attempted in the minor (2.50 for Education minor).
  4. A minor degree plan which will be prepared by the Department of Health and Human Performance, 104 Garrison Gym.

Asian American Studies

A minor in Asian American Studies requires a minimum of 18 semester hours. Twelve of the 18 hours must be in residence of which 9 hours must be advanced. No more than 6 semester hours can be taken from one field of study. Minimum 2.0 grade point average for all courses applied to the minor is required. All students are required to take the following courses in this minor.

CUST 2300 and 4300

Students are also required to take 3 semester hours from the following: ANTH 2302, ANTH 2304 ECON 2304, ECON 2305, ENGL 2323, PSYC 2380, SOC 2325

In addition, students must successfully complete nine (9) semester hours to be taken from the Human and Social Sciences, from which at least 6 semesters hours must be taken at the upper level 3000-4000, including at least 3 semester hours at the 4000-level. Students may choose from the following courses: AMER 3300, ANTH 3363, ARCH 3358, CHNS 2301/2302, 3350, 3352, COMM 3375, 3379, CUST 3310 (3397), 3315, 4320, ECON 3355, JPNS 2501/2502, POLS 4320, 4321, 4322, SOC 3327, 3390, RELS 3396

 Note: On occasion, new courses including selected topics will be added to this list as they are developed. Other appropriate courses may be approved for this minor by petition. These courses or special topics must contain or deal with issues relevant to Asian American Studies in order to be approved for the Minor.

EDUC 3205 and 3206 or 3301, EPSY 3300, education methods courses (6 semester hours), and CUIN 3347 or equivalent.

Teacher Certification Program

The university and the College of Education offer bachelor's degree programs that meet the State Board for Educator Certification and the Higher Education Coordinating Board (THECB) requirements for the standard teaching certificate. Students are required to have a Texas teaching certificate to teach in Texas public schools.

The college offers the following standard teaching certificates: early childhood-4; 4-8; 8-12; all-level (EC-12) for specific subjects; Special Education all-level; and Special Education Supplemental.

Teacher certification programs are offered for post-baccalaureate students who hold at least a bachelor's degree. See the Education section of the Graduate and Professional Studies Catalog for further information or see an advisor in 112 Farish Hall.

All potential teacher certification candidates will be subject to a formal FBI fingerprint check before being issued a Texas teaching certificate.

Interdisciplinary Studies

Students seeking early childhood-4 and 4-8 certification must complete the requirements for the interdisciplinary studies major. Students should apply for an official degree plan in 112 Farish Hall when they reach 60 semester hours of completed course work.

The interdisciplinary studies major is composed of five components: academic foundations, pre-professional development courses, specific B.S. and Coordinating Board requirements for mathematics and science, and the Professional Development Sequence. This degree requires 120-139 semester hours. Degree outlines are available in 112 Farish Hall.

Professional Development Sequence

Professional preparation is conducted in two phases,

  1. pre-student teaching and
  2. student teaching.

Pre-student teaching consists of courses taken at the university and in public schools and follow the school district's schedule. To be admitted to these classes, students will be screened for eligibility as outlined below. Pre-student teaching may be taken during one semester or in two semesters.

Near the end of pre-student teaching, students present a portfolio that demonstrates they are ready to begin the student teaching phase.

Admission to the Professional Development Sequence

The Professional Development Sequence requires formal application. Deadlines are as follows.

Spring: October 1
Fall: March 1

Applications are available in 112 Farish Hall. The requirements are:

  • Passing scores on the Texas Higher Education Assessment (THEA). College of Education passing scores on THEA are higher than the minimum passing scores required by the University of Houston;
  • Speech Proficiency;
  • Computer Proficiency;
  • 2.50 GPA overall;
  • 2.50 in academic fields/specializations.

Students must be accepted into the Professional Development Sequence to take any course listed in the Professional Development Sequence of their degree plans.

Transfer Courses

Transfer of pre-professional and specialization courses requires approval by petition to the Associate Dean for Undergraduate Studies, Certification, and Accreditation. The 18-24 semester hours of professional development courses must be completed in residence.

Certification

Students must apply for their teaching certificate through 112 Farish Hall when they have completed all course work for their degree and have taken and passed the Texas Examination of Educator Standards (TExESs) required for certification.

Time Limitation

Professional Development Sequence, pre-professional development and specialization courses completed at the University of Houston and/or transfer credits may not apply toward a degree or teacher certification if more than five years have elapsed upon application for certification. Current standards will be enforced.

Supplementals


8-12 Grade Certification Programs

Certification as an 8-12 grade teacher is provided through Professional Development Sequences in the College of Education in conjunction with degree programs in the Colleges of Liberal Arts and Social Sciences, Natural Sciences and Mathematics, and Technology. Courses are jointly approved by these colleges and the College of Education. For certification within a degree program in any of these three colleges, see the specific college section of this catalog. Advisors for students seeking teaching certificates in addition to their degrees are located in these colleges. Students must carefully follow the degree plan prepared by their college. Normally, students may apply for a degree plan as soon as they hold junior status.

To confer a bachelor's degree and teacher certification, each of the colleges listed above and the College of Education require a minimum of 120 semester hours of course work.

Professional Development Sequence

Upon completion of pre-student teaching courses, students will be eligible for student teaching. Student teaching also requires formal application.

Deadlines are as follows.

Spring: September 15
Fall: February 15

Applications are available in 112 Farish Hall. Student Teaching requires 14 weeks in the public schools and can be done only during the Fall or Spring semesters. Student teaching must be completed at the University of Houston.
