1501: Elementary Spanish I

May not be taken for credit by students who have successfully completed three or more years of high school Spanish or two years or equivalent of high school Spanish during the three years immediately prior to enrollment. Credit for SPAN 1501 may not be applied to a degree by students who have credit for SPAN 1505. Heritage speakers of Spanish not eligible to enroll. Emphasis on basic level oral expression and listening comprehension with increasing attention to elementary reading and writing.

1502: Elementary Spanish II

Prerequisites: successful completion of 1501 or equivalent with a minimum grade of C- in twelve months immediately prior to enrollment or by placement exam immediately prior to enrollment. Credit for SPAN 1502 may not be applied toward a degree by students who have credit for SPAN 1505. Heritage speakers of Spanish not eligible to enroll. Development of more sophisticated oral expression and listening comprehension, including exposure to more complicated verb tenses and grammatical structures.

1505: Intensive Elementary Spanish
Cr. 5. (5-0). Prerequisite: placement test or permission of instructor. Credit for SPAN 1505 may not be applied toward a degree by students who have credit for SPAN 1501, or 1502. Designed for students who enter with two or more years of high school Spanish or equivalent, but are not prepared to do work at the intermediate level. May also be taken by students with strong proficiency in another romance language.

2301: Intermediate Spanish I

Heritage speakers not eligible to enroll. Continued development of oral expression and listening comprehension with increased emphasis on reading and writing skills.

2302: Intermediate Spanish II

Heritage speakers of Spanish not eligible to enroll. Cultural and literary readings, composition, and grammar review.

2307: Spanish for Hispanic Heritage Learners I
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: test placement. Credit for both SPAN 2307 and 2301 may not apply to a degree. Designed for Mexican-American and other students from a Spanish-speaking background. Emphasis on basic skills in reading, spelling, and composition.

2308: Spanish for Hispanic Heritage Learners II
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2307 or placement test. Credit for both SPAN 2308 and 2302 may not apply to degree. Continued development of reading and writing skills and control of universal Spanish prose style.

2309: Spanish for Business
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: successful completion of SPAN 2301 with a minimum grade of C- in 12 months immediately prior to enrollment or by placement exam immediately prior to enrollment. Taught in Spanish. May be substituted for SPAN 2302. Practice in speaking, reading, writing, and translating Spanish in typical business situations.

2320: Culture of Mexico

2351: Introduction to Latino Cultural Studies
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: ENGL 1304 or equivalent. Does not apply toward the Spanish major or minor. Applies as elective for minors in Latin American Studies or World Cultures and Literatures. Introduction to latino cultural studies with emphasis on latino migration, urbanization, acculturation and their impacts on family, community, identity, and sex roles as expressed in literature as well as visual and performing arts. Taught in English.

2394: Topics in Spanish Language and Culture
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: successful completion of SPAN 2301 with a minimum grade of C- in 12 months immediately prior to enrollment or by placement exam immediately prior to enrollment. Taught in Spanish. May be substituted for SPAN 2302. Includes medical Spanish and business Spanish.

3301: Oral Communication in Spanish
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2302 or equivalent. For students who have learned Spanish as a foreign language. Students from a Spanish speaking environment normally will enroll in SPAN 3307. Intensive oral practice in small and large group context.

3302: Written Communication in Spanish
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2302 or 2308 or equivalent. Intensive practice in the writing of Spanish in varying formal and informal styles from reports to letters.

3303: Spanish Phonetics
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 3301 or SPAN 3307 and 3302 or 3308. Intensive practice in Spanish pronunciation, including transcription and drills.

3307: Public Speaking in Spanish
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 2308 or SPAN 3301 or placement by examination. Intensive practice in composition, strategy and delivery of speeches in Spanish. Recommended for students going into the professions, and for professionals who must use Spanish in formal and professional settings.

3308: Written Communication for Hispanic Heritage Learners

3342: Business Environment of the Hispanic World
Cr. 3. (3-0). Prerequisite: SPAN 3341. Cultural values and the social, political, and economic circumstances which shape the current business environment of the Hispanic world, with special emphasis on Latin America and Spain.

3345: Hispanic Folklore of the Southwest
