TxPHARM: doctor of Pharmacy
(non-traditional Pharm.D.)
TxPHARM in a non-traditional program designed to meet the needs of practicing
pharmacists in Texas who desire to enhance their knowledge, skills, and
credentials through completion of the Doctor of Pharmacy degree. This
program is intended to be widely available and is not a specialty, post-B.S.,
or graduate-level program.
The practice of pharmacy, like all health professions, is undergoing
rapid change. With the emergence of technology and automation, the focus
of pharmacy practice is shifting from drug distribution to patient care.
Pharmacists have been given expanded clinical practice roles, termed pharmaceutical
care. This program has been developed to provide practicing pharmacists
the enhanced knowledge and skills required for expanded clinical practice.
TxPHARM is a cooperative program. Participating institutions include
Texas Southern University, Texas Tech University, University of Houston,
and University of Texas at Austin. These institutions share faculty, deliver
a common core curriculum, coordinate admissions to equalize enrollment,
charge the same state-based tuition (although fees may vary), and use
comparable instructional methodologies and student assessments. As designed,
the program provides for the cooperative delivery of doctoral education
to busy practitioners currently licensed in the state using proven adult
educational strategies and electronic instructional methods in the delivery
of the program to every region of the state.
