Degrees

The Moores School of Music is a full member of the National Association of Schools of Music and a member of the Texas Association of Music Schools. It offers Bachelor of Music, Bachelor of Arts, Master of Music, and Doctor of Musical Arts degrees. Information on graduate degrees is available in the Graduate and Professional Studiescatalog.

Students majoring in other areas may elect courses in music and may participate in the ensembles. Instruction in applied music will be provided for students majoring in other departments at the university as long as teaching time and practice facilities are available after the requirements for music majors are met. Students enrolled in applied music must participate in the large ensemble appropriate for the instrument or voice. This must happen in each semester of applied music study.

Bachelor of Music

All students applying for acceptance as majors in the Moores School of Music must audition on their principal instrument or voice and be able to meet at least a freshman level of performance. In addition, they will be required to meet at least a freshman level in music theory by examination. Music majors transferring from other institutions must have a 2.50 minimum grade point average in all music courses attempted.

Bachelor of Arts

The Bachelor of Arts degree in music is offered to students wishing to pursue a program that places great emphasis on the liberal arts, but with a strong concentration in the field of music. All students applying for acceptance as majors in the Moores school of Music must audition on their principal instrument or voice and be able to meet at least a freshman level of performance. Diagnostic checks in musicianship are required for the Bachelor of Arts degree. In addition to the college requirements for the Bachelor of Arts, a minimum of 48 semester hours in music are required.

Areas of Concentration

Students who have been admitted to the University of Houston are eligible for consideration as majors in the Moores School of Music. At the undergraduate level, music students may select from various curricula leading to the Bachelor of Music or the Bachelor of Arts degrees. Areas of concentration on the Bachelor of Music degree are applied music (performance), music theory, music composition, and music with elective studies (Teacher Certification [instrumental or vocal], Business, Media Production, Religion, or Theatre).

Applied music (performance) concentrations are available in harpsichord, organ, piano, voice, guitar, and all band and orchestral instruments.

No student is accepted officially in an area of concentration until approval has been granted by the faculty of the Moores School of Music through the director. If an entering freshman or transfer student has a clear professional objective compatible with the curricula already listed, tentative acceptance in one of these programs may be made at once. However, an official decision must be completed before beginning junior-level course work. When appropriate, reasonable changes in a degree program may be made subsequently at the request of the student or upon the recommendation of the music faculty. A formal application for candidacy together with a proposed degree plan must be submitted before the end of the sophomore year. The student's qualifications in performance and musicianship, record of attendance as required at Moores School of Music recitals, and cumulative grade point average are considered carefully. This degree plan is registered with the office of the dean of the college, and copies are made available to the student as well as to the Moores School of Music office.

Students may indicate their desire to major in music education at the time of admission to the university and the Moores School of Music. Official application is made at the beginning of the junior year and is subject to approval by the director and faculty of the Moores School of Music as well as by the College of Education. Students with a concentration in composition or music theory are not recognized officially as such until the end of the sophomore year, but should indicate their interest as early as possible for effective counseling. Entering students should study the degree requirements for each of the programs and should follow them carefully with the aid of the faculty counselor assigned.

Recital Attendance

Programs covering a wide range of literature and varied media of performance are presented each semester by faculty and by students. All music majors enrolled in nine or more hours must attend at least 12 recitals each long semester. Students must attend a minimum of four Tuesday recitals, and a minimum of four non-Tuesday recitals. Only Moores School of Music sponsored recitals will be counted for credit. Performances in which the student is a participant will not count toward recital attendance. To count for credit, programs must be turned in to the Music Office within two weeks of the performance date. Tuesday recital programs must be turned in the same day.

Music majors enrolled as part-time students must complete this recital attendance requirement each semester in proportion to their enrollment and their progress toward degree completion. Contact the Undergraduate Advisor for clarifying details.

Students deficient in the recital attendance requirement may not request preparation of a degree plan or schedule a degree-requirement recital.
