Elementary School Certification

Core Curriculum Requirements

Specializations

Students seeking elementary school certification (grades 1-8) must complete the requirements for the Interdisciplinary Studies major. Students should apply for an official degree plan in 112 Farish Hall when they reach 60 semester hours of completed coursework.

The Interdisciplinary Studies major is composed of four components: the university core curriculum, two specializations (at least one from the list below of academic specializations), prerequisites to the Professional Development Sequence, including specific B.S. requirements for mathematics and formal science, and the Professional Development Sequence. This degree requires 120-139 semester hours. Degree outlines are available in 112 Farish Hall.

At least one specialization of 18 semester hours, of which nine are advanced, is required in one of the following academic fields. Students may substitute more advanced courses for which they have prerequisite courses with a College of Education advisor's approval. Special sections of some courses may be offered; please check with advisors in 112 Farish Hall. Be sure to check prerequisites before enrolling for these courses.


Art

ART 1301, 1304, 1350, plus

ART 3300, 3304, 3350, or
any other advanced drawing, painting, or ceramics courses


Bilingual Education

Academic specialization in Spanish
(see Spanish specialization below) plus

Twelve hours selected from the following:
HIST 3332, 3333, ANTH 3312 or 3373, POLS 3372 or other Mexican American Studies electives


Biology

Ten hours from BIOL 3331, BIOL 3332, BIOL 3333, or other advanced BIOL courses.

The second specialization may be another of the academic specializations listed above or may be a specialization that is not recognized for elementary teacher certification such as, African-American Studies, Asian American Studies, Chemistry, Computer Science, Dance, Theatre, Economics, German, Journalism, Latin, Mexican American Studies, Physics, Political Science, Psychology or Sociology. Students choosing a non-academic specialization must inquire in 112 Farish Hall for information.

If students change their field of teaching specialization, they may be required to take additional courses to meet certification requirements.
