The work of higher education can be summed up in just a few mighty words: teaching, research, and service, or to put it even more simply: Future Building. The UH master plan framework is an obvious manifestation of Future Building. But physical growth is only one small part of what the University of Houston is doing and must continue to do to ensure the successful future of our students, our community, and our state, and to guarantee our place among the nation’s great metropolitan research universities.
More important than buildings are the people who are touched every day by the University of Houston. The future of our nation rests on the success of our cities and metropolitan areas, and the University of Houston is playing a pivotal role in ensuring that Houston is well-positioned for that future. Indeed, Future Building drives our academic programs, inspires our research, and underscores our outreach.
We are Houston’s university, and it is imperative for our city and our state that UH become the next flagship research university in Texas. Houston can settle for nothing less, because nothing less than the best will help Houston achieve its potential as one of the great international cities of this century.
Within this President’s Report to the Community, you will find stories about academic, research, and service successes over the past year that are helping move us closer to the future. Our faculty members are inspiring their students to reach new academic heights, and our researchers are creating new knowledge on the leading edge of national and international fields. We are changing lives throughout our city in health, education, and outreach projects that are helping to build a future for our children and our communities. The University of Houston is making a difference in Houston, in Texas, and in the world.
The University of Houston President’s Report to the Community includes accomplishments for the university’s fiscal year 2007 (September 1, 2006 to August 31, 2007).
