Dr. Donald L. Birx

As Vice Chancellor/Vice President for Research and Intellectual Property, Dr. Donald L. Birx leads the research enterprise at the University of Houston and oversees intellectual property issues systemwide. His responsibilities include developing the Center for Industrial Partnerships, which is focused on joint endeavors that translate research to practical applications and that increase the level of interplay between the business community and the University’s research faculty.

Prior to coming to UH, Dr. Birx was at New Mexico State University where he served from 1996 to 2006 as Interim Vice Provost/President for Research and Professor, President and Founder of NMSU’s Physical Science Incubator, Director of the Physical Science Laboratory. He also has worked for Systems Research Laboratories Inc., Dayton, Ohio, as Vice President and team leader of Technology and New Ventures, Principal Investigator and Program Manager, and General Manager of the Intelligent Systems Division.

Dr. Birx received his Ph.D. in electrical engineering from the University of Dayton, a MBA and MS in bio-physics from Miami University in Ohio, and a B.S. in engineering from University of California, Berkeley.
