- AAS will host the Third Annual Martin Luther King, Jr., Day Commemoration on the UH Campus. .This year, AAS will present a dramatic performance entitled "The Guardian: The Tragedy and Triumph of Emmett Till." The play will be produced by University of Houston and African American Studies Alumnus Je'Caryous Johnson and directed by Ezekial Morgan.
Emmett Louis Till's 1955 murder is considered to be one of the catalysts for
the civil rights movement. According to public history, his brutal slaying,
the manner in which the criminal investigation was handled and the court
acquittal of the murderers who later confessed, ignited a fire that had been
smoldering: the African American struggle for life, liberty and the pursuit
of happiness. Till became blacks' symbolic sacrificial lamb for justice. The free,
public performance will be held 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 20, 2000, at the UH
Cullen Performance Hall, UH Entrance 1, at 4800 Calhoun Rd.
