As the University of Houston embarked on its first year as a public institution, the outgoing board of regents and the larger board of governors were feted at a gala held at the Houston Club in recognition of their leadership during the years UH was a private institution. Texas Governor John Connally, UH President Philip G. Hoffman, and many civic dignitaries and community leaders attended the event.
