The 2001-02 academic year is a time of great joy and pride at the University of Houston, for we are celebrating 75 years as a higher education institution. From humble beginnings as the Houston Junior College, established in 1927, to expansion into a four-year institution in 1934, to admittance into the Texas public higher education system in 1963, UH's history has been marked by the vision of its founders, the generosity of its supporters, and by steady growth in the quality and prestige of its academic and research programs.

The official celebration was launched on September 21, 2001, with a special Red and White Ball, the Houston Alumni Organization's biennial fund raising event. This year the Ball honored the Cullen Family, who to this day continue the tradition of generous support started by Hugh Roy Cullen, considered by many as the "father of the university," and his wife Lillie Cranz Cullen. Numerous other activities, events, and programs are planned for the anniversary year.

Come back and visit this site often, for we will be constantly adding new and exciting links depicting the life and times of the University of Houston, and the events surrounding our 75th Anniversary. And don't forget to participate by leaving your reminiscences of the University in the special "Memories" guest book.
