ALL STUDENTS TAKING ANY INDEPENDENT STUDY COURSE FROM ME IN ANY SEMESTER WILL PRINT-OUT THE POSTED SYLLABUS FOR THE COURSE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO ENROLL FOR IT. THEY WILL TAKE IT WITH THEM TO FILL OUT THE PETITION USING THE INFORMATION IN THE SYLLABUS AND THE EXACT WORDING BELOW.

Students who take my Asian Development  (Econ 3355) course may also take my Economics 4398 - Special Problems in Asian Development in which they will add

·         Science and Civilization in China: Volume 7, The Social Background; Part 2, The Social Background, Part 2, General Conclusions and Reflections  by Joseph Needham (Author), Kenneth Girdwood Robinson (Editor), Mark Elvin (Introduction), Ray Huang (Contributor)  Cambridge University Press

and (choose the one in each case that you did not read for Econ 3355)

or

and either

·         Islamic Science and the Making of the European Renaissance (Studies in the History of Science and Technology) by George Saliba The MIT Press, 2011, ISBN-10: 0262516152, ISBN-13: 978-0262516150

to their reading for Econ 3355 and do a combined paper of 40 to 50 pages for the two course together (Econ 3355 and Econ 4398). Basically, the student will do the same work as for the three hour graduate course but get six undergraduate hours of credit. Obviously, this course is restricted to those taking my Asian Development class (this summer it is only open to those doing the China option.). Two books and 15 to 20 additional pages is not much work for three hours credit. I do however expect that the 40 to 50 pages will be more in depth than the 30 page paper. See syllabus for Economics 3355 Summer 2012 for details.

In filling out the petition to take the course write the following: "Taking  Econ 3355 -  The student will  read an additional three assigned books and add 15 to 20 pages to their 30 page paper for Econ 3355. The paper is expected to cover the assigned topic in greater depth (particularly in the cultural/historical dimension) as well as greater length."
