ALL STUDENTS TAKING ANY INDEPENDENT STUDY COURSE FROM ME IN ANY SEMESTER WILL PRINT-OUT THE POSTED SYLLABUS FOR THE COURSE BEFORE ATTEMPTING TO ENROLL FOR IT. THEY WILL TAKE IT WITH THEM TO FILL OUT THE PETITION USING THE INFORMATION IN THE SYLLABUS AND THE EXACT WORDING BELOW.

Students who take my Asian Development  (Econ 3355) course may also take my Economics 4298 - Special Problems in Asian Development in which they will add

 

·         Science and Civilization in China: Volume 7, The Social Background; Part 2, The Social Background, Part 2, General Conclusions and Reflections  by Joseph Needham (Author), Kenneth Girdwood Robinson (Editor), Mark Elvin (Introduction), Ray Huang (Contributor)  Cambridge University Press.

 

and (choose the one of the two books below that you did not read for Econ 3355)

 

·         On Their Own Terms: Science in China, 1550-1900  by Benjamin A. Elman, Harvard University Press

 

or

 

·         A Cultural History of Modern Science in China (New Histories of Science, Technology, and Medicine) [Paperback] by Benjamin A. Elman, Harvard University Press

 

In filling out the petition to take the course write the following: "Taking  Econ 3355 -  The student will read an additional two assigned books and add 15 pages to their 30 page paper for Econ 3355. The paper is expected to cover the assigned topic in greater depth (particularly in the cultural/historical dimension) as well as greater length."
