Graduate theory seminar (master's/doctoral level): Music and Text in Nineteenth-Century Italian Opera. Meets T Th at 10:00am in MSM 110. http://www.uh.edu/~adavis5/6397verdi/
This will be on the operas of Verdi, mainly, and will be a study of the integration of musical forms and text forms in Verdi's work; we'll pay particular attention to what was known in the nineteenth century, and what's known in recent literature on Verdi, as the "solita forma." We'll also study some music of Puccini, with attention especially to how he adapted (or didn't) the solita forma conventions in his work. Reading will be extensive and may include work of Harold Powers, Scott Balthazar, David Rosen, Phillip Gossett, Robert Moreen, David Lawton, and others. Listening will be extensive and will include Verdi's La Traviata, Rigoletto, Il Trovatore, Don Carlos, Un ballo in maschera, Aida, and others; and Puccini's La Boheme, Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, Gianni Schichi, Turandot, and others. |
